Literacy Assessments
Are you concerned about your child's reading?
Schedule a literacy assessment to get the answers you need. Results are provided in a written report and can inform your child's literacy intervention plan, goals, and recommendations, including accommodations for school. Choose from the following options:
-
The Basic Literacy Assessment & Plan provides insight your child's reading rate, accuracy, comprehension level (oral, silent, and listening), phonological awareness, rapid naming, writing, orthography, and an executive functioning survey.
-
Dyslexia Literacy Assessment: An informal diagnostic that analyzes students' literacy to determine if one of the four subtypes of dyslexia is present: dyphonetic, surface, mixed and reading comprehension deficits. This can be added to the Basic Literacy Assessment.
-
Writing Assessment: An informal diagnostic that looks at the underlying processes including the cognitive, motoric, and linguistic processes affecting written language skills and identifies the possibility of dysgraphia as well as the subtype.
-
Comprehensive Literacy Assessment: Includes & aggregates ALL of the literacy assessments including: Basic Lit, Dyslexia, and Writing Informal Diagnostic Assessments
-
These assessments cannot provide a formal diagnosis, but they can be used to pursue a formal diagnosis in tandem with psych ed eval results or to negotiate with schools for a formal 504 plan or for accommodations and school-based support.

About
Carolyn Reid, Director of HZ Tutors
As a mom of four, living in the Hereford Zone, I started the Hereford Zone Tutor in response to a need for literacy & learning support in our community after struggling to support my own neurodivergent children.
I love to learn and read, but too often, school and homework is drudgery. Trapped behind screens all days, many of our kids are leaving a long day at school without the foundational skills to read nor with the critical thinking and attention skills to create, innovate, or make informed decisions. I believe learning happens by doing, by moving and making and playing, singing and building, reading complex literature and taking deep dives into rabbit holes that pique our curiosity. I believe we are innately wired to learn and to want to learn, so when a child hates learning or school, there is some sort of barrier such as a learning difference. More than anything, I want to share my joy of learning and reading with my students, helping them unlock the code, get organized, and become metacognitive and mindful, empowering them to embrace the challenging yet rewarding journey of learning.
My work with students is informed by nearly two decades as an award winning K-12 educator, reading specialist, instructional leader, and graduate professor in public and private schools focusing on students with language-based learning differences, Dyslexia, ADHD, Giftedness, and multilingualism. Over the years, I have pursued certifications in Orton-Gillingham, Project Read, and SIOP, along with an M.Ed in Reading, Special Education, ESOL, and administration.
Currently, I serve as faculty in Towson University's Graduate Reading Program, work with local non-profits to support family literacy initiatives in Baltimore County and Baltimore City, and sit on the MSDE Council for Gifted and Talented Education advocating for 2e & 3e learners.
Working with students in and around the Hereford Zone has been incredibly rewarding! I am honored to work alongside a team of talented reading and learning specialists, ensuring that our special community, its' students and adults, have the literacy they need to succeed.
What People Say
Lori
“Like many kids in the pandemic, our son was struggling with reading and emotional regulation. Carolyn figured out how best to motivate and focus him (lots of movement!) and he has made tremendous progress. His confidence in his own abilities has gone way up! Highly recommended."
Mara
"Our family struggled for several years to find adequate services for our child, including many school-based executive function coaches. In 6 months Carolyn Reid has made more headway then 3 years worth of other services. We have seen growth in organization, time management, distress tolerance, and confidence. Carolyn is warm and supportive, while also setting expectations and maintaining boundaries. She finds and respects our child's strengths and uses them as the starting point for skill building. She also works with the families to provide education and support as we navigate high school and plan for the future. We are truly fortunate to have her on our team."
Theresa
“Our son has had the privilege of working with Carolyn since the beginning of this school year. She is professional, personable, patient, and has built a great rapport with him. Carolyn has taken the time to understand his complicated learning profile and tailor the instruction accordingly. He is benefiting from her use of multisensory interventions to address his needs in the areas of reading comprehension and written expression. She also incorporates executive functioning skills into the sessions, which has been extremely helpful. Our son leaves the sessions feeling more confident in the subject areas focused on that day. She has played a vital role in helping us get through a difficult school year. Would highly recommend her to any family that has a child with language-based learning differences, ADHD, and/or executive functioning deficits.”
